Burnt Joker upgrades the first poker hand discarded each round, so choose the target hand before discarding anything else. Feed it the hand level you intend to score later, then use remaining discards to assemble that plan. The ability is predictable and permanent, which makes it a reliable way to turn an ordinary repeated hand into a scaling source across many Antes.

Burnt Joker’s important order is the first discard of each round. Put the intended poker hand together, discard that hand before making any exploratory discard, and then search for the scoring hand. For example, if Pair is the long-term plan, discard a Pair first every round even when High Card would be easier to throw away; consistency is the upgrade engine.

Obelisk benefits from a deck that can establish and later pivot among hand types, while Yorick makes the discard-heavy play pattern more rewarding over time. Brainstorm can copy Burnt Joker after you can reliably discard the intended hand first. The key is discipline: every round should have a clear first discard and a hand level worth investing in.

Skip it when you have too few discards to spare, when the current build needs every card immediately, or when no poker hand is likely to be repeated enough to justify upgrades. It is slower than a direct score card and can be wrong for a run that changes hands constantly without a durable target.

The most common error is discarding a random hand first and upgrading something you never play. Another is forgetting that only the first discarded poker hand counts each round. Decide the target before interacting with the discard button, and do not assume it upgrades the hand you score most often unless you intentionally feed that hand.

Treat the current in-game tooltip as the source of truth: patches, platform versions, and mods can change values, availability, or interactions. This rating is editorial rather than permanent; it weighs copy value, scaling ceiling, route stability, and required setup. When a version changes, the tooltip is checked before strategy notes and tiers are revised.
