Effect
What does Brainstorm do in Balatro?
Place a scalable or retrigger target on the far left before locking the layout.
It is unlockable and can appear through normal shop play.
How to use
How to use Brainstorm
Brainstorm copies the far-left Joker, so reserve that slot for the payoff you want twice before committing to a hand. Unlike Blueprint, it does not care about its own neighbors; this makes it easier to protect a leftmost scaler while the rest of the board changes. Build the layout around one proven target, then use the remaining slots for support and survival.
Positioning and example
Brainstorm positioning and example
Brainstorm only reads the far-left slot. Put Baron in that slot for a held-King board, then place non-positional support to the right. With a face-card scorer, keep the copied payoff leftmost and move Blueprint separately beside its own target. The useful rule is to lock the left edge first, then arrange everything else around it.
Best synergies
Best Brainstorm synergies
Brainstorm complements Blueprint because their copy directions can cover different targets. Put Baron on the far left only after you have enough held Kings and hand size to make each copy matter. With Triboulet or Hanging Chad, use Brainstorm to repeat the engine that benefits from a dense face-card deck or carefully ordered played cards rather than copying a setup card.
When to skip it
When to skip Brainstorm
Pass when the leftmost slot would contain a mediocre filler for several Antes, or when the run needs an immediate score card instead of a conditional multiplier. It is also risky to buy before deciding which hand, rank, or consumable engine the deck is pursuing; a copy effect cannot repair an unfocused board.
Common mistakes
Common Brainstorm mistakes
Players often set the intended target second from the left and accidentally copy a utility card. The target must be literally leftmost. Do not confuse Brainstorm with Blueprint when shuffling the board, and do not judge it only by the current hand: its value rises sharply after the copied Joker has real scaling, retriggers, or rank support.
Version and rating notes
Brainstorm version and rating notes
Treat the current in-game tooltip as the source of truth: patches, platform versions, and mods can change values, availability, or interactions. This rating is editorial rather than permanent; it weighs copy value, scaling ceiling, route stability, and required setup. When a version changes, the tooltip is checked before strategy notes and tiers are revised.
